Table Runner Yardage Basics
I made a table runner for my dining table last Thanksgiving and learned that the overhang is more important than the table length — a runner that is too short looks like a placemat run amok. Table runners are one of the easiest home decor projects to sew, and the yardage calculation is straightforward. The runner length is your table length plus overhang at both ends (typically 6-12 inches each side). The width is whatever you prefer — 14 inches is standard, but anything from 10 to 18 inches works.
I like to add a hem allowance of 0.5 inches on all sides for a double-fold hem. This gives a clean, professional finish. For most tables, a single runner can be cut from 1 to 1.5 yards of fabric, making them excellent beginner projects.
Table Runner Styles and Their Fabric Needs
Beyond the basic rectangular runner, you can make tapered runners (wider at the ends), ruffled runners (with gathered trim), or patchwork runners (pieced from multiple fabrics). Each style needs slightly different yardage, but the calculator gives you a solid baseline for the main fabric body.
