The home decor fabric calculator works by figuring out how many pieces fit across your chosen fabric width. For example, if your curtain panels are 36 inches wide and your fabric is 54 inches, only one panel fits per width. But with 108-inch extra-wide fabric, your 36-inch panel fits three times — cutting your yardage dramatically.
Home Decor Yardage Tips
Here are a few things that tripped me up as a beginner. First, always buy a little extra — 10% waste is my minimum, but I bump it to 20% for fabrics with large prints. Second, hem allowances add up. A 2-inch hem on each of four sides of a tablecloth adds 4 inches to both dimensions. Third, fabric width is more important than you think. Switching from 45-inch to 54-inch fabric can save you 15-20% on yardage for most home decor projects.
