Placemat Yardage Basics
I made my first set of six placemats as a housewarming gift and was amazed that a single yard of fabric was enough. I chose a quilting cotton with a subtle stripe and cut them with the stripe running the long way. Placemats are one of the most satisfying quick sewing projects. A standard 13x18 placemat uses very little fabric, and you can make a full set of 6 from just over a yard of 54-inch fabric. The calculator lets you choose from standard sizes or enter custom dimensions.
The key to placemat yardage is fitting as many pieces as possible across your fabric width. On 54-inch fabric with a 0.5-inch hem, each placemat needs 14 inches of width (13 + 1 for hems), so 3 placemats fit per fabric width.
Placemat Styles and Variations
Beyond basic rectangles, you can make placemats with rounded corners, contrasting binding, or quilted layers. Each variation may need slightly different fabric amounts. For quilted placemats, add about 0.25 yards for the batting and backing.
