Valance Yardage Basics
I made my first window valance before I fully understood fullness ratios, and the result was a sad, flat strip of fabric that barely covered the top of the window. I rebuilt it with 2x fullness and it looked completely different — like a professional window treatment. The yardage calculation is similar to curtains but shorter — just the valance drop (usually 12-18 inches) plus hem allowance, multiplied by how many fabric widths you need.
The fullness ratio is the key variable. Gathered valances need 2x the window width in fabric, tailored valances need 1.5x, and scarf valances need 3x. For a 36-inch window, that means 54, 72, or 108 inches of fabric width respectively.
Valance Styles and Their Fabric Needs
Beyond the basic fullness ratio, different valance styles have unique requirements. Scalloped valances need extra fabric for the scallop shape. Ascot valances need angled cuts. Cornice valances are usually upholstered over a board and need covering fabric plus trim.
