Scarf Styles and Fabric Requirements
I have made countless scarves over the years — they are the perfect small project for trying new fabrics or techniques. A rectangular scarf (60" x 12") is the most common: it wraps easily and works with any fabric. An infinity scarf is essentially a long rectangle sewn into a loop. A square scarf (36" x 36") is great for head wraps, neckerchiefs, or pocket squares.
Rectangular and infinity scarves are cut along the fabric length, so the scarf length is the limiting factor. For a 60" rectangular scarf on 54" fabric, you need about 1.75 yards (60" + 2" hem = 62", plus waste). The width is narrow enough that multiple scarves fit side by side — on 54" fabric, four 12" scarves fit across the width.
Fabric Choices for Scarves
Fabric choice makes or breaks a scarf. Lightweight fabrics drape beautifully: silk charmeuse, rayon challis, cotton voile, and linen are all excellent. Medium-weight fabrics like quilting cotton work for rectangular scarves but are better for square scarves that need more structure. For infinity scarves, I love rayon challis — it drapes like silk but is easier to sew and wash. Avoid heavy fabrics; a scarf needs to wrap and knot easily.
