Headband Styles and Fabric Needs
Headbands are one of the most fabric-efficient projects you can make. A single adult headband uses 0.1 to 0.22 yards — that is just 4 to 8 inches of fabric. A child headband uses even less. This makes headbands the perfect project for fabric scraps and remnants.
A knotted headband is a simple rectangle (about 4" x 20" for adult) with a small knot at the top. A twist headband has a twisted center section and is slightly wider. A wide headband (about 5" wide) covers more of the forehead and needs a bit more fabric. All three styles are quick to sew — I can make a batch of ten headbands in under an hour.
Fabric and Elastic for Headbands
Stretch fabrics work best for headbands — cotton-lycra, jersey knit, and rayon spandex all have the right amount of give. For knotted and twist styles, add a small piece of elastic (about 4" for adult) at the back seam so the headband fits snugly without slipping. Wide headbands often skip the elastic and rely on the fabric stretch. If you are using woven fabric, add elastic to all styles for a comfortable fit.
