How to Calculate Fabric for a Fitted Crib Sheet
I made a crib sheet for my niece and was shocked at how little fabric it actually takes — but the elastic channel requires specific math that most guides skip. Fitted crib sheets are one of those projects that looks complicated but is actually straightforward once you understand the formula. The key is accounting for the mattress depth and the elastic casing. A standard crib mattress is 28" x 52" with a 6" depth. When I make a fitted sheet, I add twice the mattress depth (for the sides), twice the elastic allowance, and 2 inches for seam allowances on both width and length.
Here is a real example: for a standard crib sheet on 54" wide fabric, the cutting size comes out to about 46" x 70". That fits comfortably on 54" fabric with one piece across. You need just under 2 yards per sheet. The elastic runs through a casing sewn around the entire perimeter.
Crib Sheet Fabric Tips
Cotton percale is my top choice for crib sheets. It is tightly woven, breathable, and gets softer with every wash. Jersey knit is another great option — it stretches naturally and fits snugly without much elastic. Whatever fabric you choose, pre-wash it before cutting. Cotton shrinks, and you do not want your beautifully fitted sheet to pucker after its first wash.
