Baby Clothes Yardage by Size and Garment
Sewing baby clothes is one of the most rewarding projects — and the fabric requirements are delightfully small. A newborn onesie needs just 0.25 yards (9 inches) of fabric. Even a 24-month dress needs less than 1 yard. This makes baby clothes perfect for using up remnant fabric from larger projects.
I keep a stash of baby-weight cottons for last-minute gifts. A 0.5-yard cut can become a romper for a 6-month-old. The same amount makes two pairs of baby pants. For dresses, I like to use a quarter yard for the bodice and a half yard for the skirt — it is amazing how little fabric a baby dress needs.
Fabric Choices for Baby Clothes
Soft, breathable fabrics are essential for baby clothes. Cotton lawn and voile are lightweight and drape beautifully for dresses and onesies. Cotton interlock knit stretches for easy dressing and is the standard for store-bought baby clothes. French terry is slightly heavier and makes cozy rompers for cooler weather. Whatever you choose, make sure it is machine washable — baby clothes need frequent washing.
