Fabric Pattern Repeat Guide: Straight Match vs Half-Drop and the 20-40% Extra Yardage Rule

How pattern repeats add 20-40% to your fabric needs — straight match, half-drop, and railroaded patterns explained with real calculation formulas

You find the perfect floral print. The pattern envelope says 3 yards. You buy exactly 3 yards. Then you get home and realize — the flowers don't line up across your curtain panels, and you don't have enough fabric to fix it. Pattern repeats are the single biggest reason sewers under-buy fabric, and the extra yardage they require catches almost every beginner by surprise the first time.

What Is a Pattern Repeat?

A pattern repeat is the distance before the design starts over. It has two dimensions:

  • Vertical repeat — the distance from one point in the pattern to the identical point directly above or below it, measured along the length of the fabric. This is the number that matters for cutting multiple pieces that need to match, like curtain panels or dress front pattern pieces.
  • Horizontal repeat — the distance across the width of the fabric. This matters when you have to seam two widths together and want the pattern to continue across the seam (common with wide curtains and upholstery).

The repeat measurement is usually printed on the bolt label or the fabric listing online. Common repeat sizes: small ditzy prints have a 1–4" repeat, medium florals are 6–12", and large-scale prints can be 18–27" or more. The larger the repeat, the more extra fabric you need.

2. Straight Match: The Most Common (and Most Efficient)

In a straight match (also called a "straight across" match), the design lines up at the exact same position on every strip of fabric. When you place two pieces side by side, the pattern matches straight horizontally.

How it works for cutting: Each cut piece must start at the same point in the repeat. If your first panel starts at the top of a flower motif, every subsequent panel must also start at the top of that same flower motif. This means you lose some fabric between panels — the extra is the waste between the cut length and the repeat boundary.

Extra fabric formula for straight match:

Extra per piece = (cut length / repeat, rounded up to nearest whole number) x repeat - cut length
Then: Total extra = extra per piece x (number of pieces - 1)

If your cut length is 68" and the repeat is 24": 68 / 24 = 2.83, round up to 3 full repeats. 3 x 24 = 72". So each piece needs 72" instead of 68" — that's an extra 4" per piece. For four curtain panels, you need (4 - 1) x 4" = 12" extra total, or about 1/3 yard more than the basic calculation would suggest.

3. Half-Drop / Brick Match: The One That Really Eats Fabric

A half-drop match (also called a brick match or offset match) means the pattern lines up diagonally — the repeat on one strip is offset by half the vertical repeat from the next strip. Think of how bricks are laid in a wall.

Half-drop patterns are beautiful but greedy with fabric. Because every other strip is offset by half a repeat, you lose more fabric matching the pattern across pieces. Estimate 30-40% extra yardage for a half-drop match compared to the same project in a solid fabric.

The calculation is more complex because the offset means some repeats are skipped entirely. The practical rule: calculate the straight-match yardage first, then add another 10-15% on top of that for the half-drop complexity.

4. Random / Tossed Pattern: No Matching Needed

A random or tossed pattern has no obvious alignment — think scattered polka dots, abstract splatters, marbled textures, or all-over tiny florals with no clear vertical or horizontal grid. These are the most fabric-efficient prints because you don't need to match anything. Cut your pieces any way they fit, and the result still looks intentional.

How to tell if a pattern is truly random: Pick two identical motifs on the fabric, measure the distance between them, and look for another pair at the same distance. If you can't find a consistent grid, it's random. Solids and textures (linen slubs, chambray, heathered knits) also require zero pattern-matching extra.

5. Real Calculation Example: 68" Curtain With 24" Repeat

Let's walk through a real curtain project to see how the extra adds up across multiple panels.

The project: Two curtain panels for a 48" wide window, each panel finished at 84" long (68" cut length when you add 8" header + 8" hem). Fabric is 54" wide with a 24" straight match floral print.

Without pattern match: Two panels x 68" = 136" = 3.78 yards. You'd buy 3.875 yards (3 7/8).

With pattern match (straight match):

  • 68" cut / 24" repeat = 2.83, round up to 3 repeats
  • 3 x 24" = 72" required per panel
  • Extra per panel: 72" - 68" = 4"
  • Total fabric: 72" (first panel) + 72" (second panel) = 144" = 4 yards exactly

That's 4 yards instead of 3.78 — only about 6% more for this specific case. But if the repeat were 27" instead of 24", each panel would need 81" (3 x 27") for the same 68" cut length, bringing the total to 4.5 yards — a 19% increase. The relationship between cut length and repeat size is the entire game.

Golden rule: When the repeat is close to but slightly less than your cut length, you lose the most fabric to matching. When the repeat divides evenly into your cut length, you lose the least.

6. Railroaded Fabric: The Alternative That Avoids Vertical Matching

Railroaded fabric is printed or woven so the pattern runs horizontally (across the width) instead of vertically (along the length). It's common in upholstery fabric because sofa cushions are wider than they are tall — railroaded fabric lets you wrap a single width across an entire cushion without vertical seams or pattern matching.

When fabric is railroaded, you turn your cutting layout 90 degrees: the width of the fabric becomes your "length" and the length you buy becomes your "width." This eliminates vertical pattern matching for wide pieces but may require more yardage overall. Always check whether your upholstery fabric is railroaded before calculating yardage — the difference can be 2-3 yards on a sofa project.
