How Pattern Matching Affects Your Fabric Yardage
I used to think pattern matching was optional — just line it up roughly and no one will notice, right? Wrong. The first time I made curtains with a bold floral print, the pattern was off by two inches between panels. It was all I could see every time I walked into the room. That is when I started taking pattern repeats seriously.
The fabric repeating pattern calculator works on a simple principle: each piece you cut needs an extra "repeat unit" to allow for alignment. If your repeat is 6 inches and you are cutting 4 matching pieces, you need 24 extra inches of fabric. The calculator factors this into the total, adds your waste percentage, and rounds up to the nearest quarter yard.
Pattern Repeat Sizes by Fabric Type
| Fabric Type | Typical Repeat | Extra Yardage |
|---|---|---|
| Small geometric | 0.5" - 2" | Minimal (5-10%) |
| Medium floral / stripe | 4" - 6" | 15-20% |
| Large floral / plaid | 6" - 12" | 20-30% |
| Extra large repeat | 12" - 27" | 30-50% |
