Bed Skirt Yardage Basics

I reupholstered a bedroom set last year and the bed skirt was the most deceptive part of the project — it looked like it would take a yard or two but ended up needing nearly four. Bed skirts (also called dust ruffles) are surprisingly fabric-intensive because the ruffle runs along three sides of the bed — both sides and the foot. The perimeter of a queen bed is 200 inches (60 + 60 + 80), and with 2x fullness that means 400 inches of ruffle fabric.

The drop length (how far the skirt hangs from the box spring to the floor) is typically 14-16 inches. Standard bed frames are about 14 inches from the box spring to the floor, so a 14-inch drop just skims the floor.

Bed Skirt Styles Compared

Gathered bed skirts (2x fullness) are the most common and look soft and romantic. Pleated bed skirts use less fabric (1x fullness) and have a more tailored, structured look. I prefer gathered for bedrooms and pleated for guest rooms.
