Toddler Quilt Fabric Calculator
Calculate fabric for a toddler quilt including top, backing, and binding.
Toddler Quilt Sizes and Fabric Breakdown
When I made my first toddler quilt, I used the same fabric for the top, backing, and binding — it simplified the shopping list. A 36" x 48" quilt (the most common toddler size) fits nicely on 54" fabric. The quilt top uses one fabric width, so you need about 1.5 yards for the top, plus 1.75 yards for the backing (with seam allowance and a 10% overage), and about 0.5 yards for the binding.
The calculator breaks down each component. If you are using a different fabric for the backing (like a soft flannel), enter the yardage separately. The binding strip is cut 2.5" wide and folded — the total length needed is the quilt perimeter plus 12 inches for overlap.
Quilt Construction Tips for Toddler Quilts
Toddler quilts get a lot of use — they are dragged around, washed frequently, and used for fort-building. Use quilting cotton for the top, flannel or cotton for the backing (it is softer against skin), and double-fold bias binding for durability. I recommend using a walking foot for quilting to prevent the layers from shifting. A simple grid or diagonal quilting pattern works beautifully for toddler quilts and goes quickly on a home machine.
