How to Use This Sewing Yardage Calculator
I have been sewing for years, and I built this sewing yardage calculator based on real patterns I have used myself. The numbers come from standard pattern envelope recommendations, adjusted for modern fabric widths and typical body measurements. Here is how it works:
- Select your project — Dresses, pants, shirts, skirts, and jackets each have different base yardage requirements.
- Choose your size — The calculator uses standard US dress sizes (XS-XXL) with corresponding body measurements.
- Adjust fabric width — Narrower 45" fabric needs more yardage; wider 60" fabric saves about 10%.
- Fine-tune length — Add or subtract inches for taller or shorter garments.
- Click calculate — The estimator gives you yardage in yards and meters with a full breakdown.
One thing I learned the hard way: always add a waste percentage. Even experienced sewists need 5-10% extra for grain line adjustments, pattern matching, and layout quirks.
Yardage Table by Garment Type
| Garment | Size M (54") | With 10% Waste | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dress (knee-length) | 2.75 yds | 3.0 yds | Sleeveless or short sleeve, fitted bodice |
| Pants (full length) | 2.25 yds | 2.5 yds | Straight leg or bootcut |
| Shirt (long sleeve) | 2.0 yds | 2.25 yds | Button-down or pullover style |
| Skirt (knee-length A-line) | 1.5 yds | 1.75 yds | Fitted waist, flared hem |
| Jacket (lined, fitted) | 3.0 yds | 3.25 yds | Lining fabric sold separately |
