Maxi Skirt Styles and Their Fabric Needs
I love sewing maxi skirts — they are comfortable, flattering, and surprisingly straightforward to make. But the yardage varies dramatically by style. A gathered maxi skirt needs about 2.75 yards for size M on 54" fabric, while a tiered maxi can jump to 3 yards or more because each tier needs its own width of fabric.
Paneled maxi skirts are the most economical at around 2.25 yards for size M. They use A-line panel construction that fits efficiently across standard 54" fabric. Gathered styles use more fabric because the fullness at the waist requires extra width. Tiered styles need the most fabric since each tier is cut as a separate rectangle.
Choosing the Right Fabric for Maxi Skirts
For maxi skirts, fabric weight and drape are critical. I prefer light to medium-weight fabrics that flow nicely — rayon challis, cotton voile, and lightweight linen are my go-tos. Heavy fabrics like denim or wool can make the skirt feel bulky and pull at the waist. For gathered styles, choose fabrics that gather well without excessive bulk at the waistline.
