Jacket Yardage by Style

Jackets are the most fabric-intensive garment to sew, and I have learned that the style you choose makes a huge difference. Blazers need the most fabric because of their tailored fit, notched lapels, multiple darts, and structured shoulders. Bomber jackets use less because of their simpler construction and ribbed trim.

Denim jackets are somewhere in between. They have a classic structure with collar, pockets, and button front, but the boxy fit is more forgiving than a blazer. Lightweight jackets like shackets or chore coats are the most efficient — simple pattern pieces, straight seams, and minimal structure.

Lining Fabric for Jackets

For lined jackets, buy the same yardage in lining fabric as the face fabric. I prefer Bemberg rayon lining for blazers (it breathes and is comfortable), and polyester lining for bombers (it is slippery and easy to get on and off). The calculator lets you toggle the lining option to see the adjusted total.
