Circle Skirt Radius Math Explained
The magic of a circle skirt lies in the math. The waist hole is a circle with a specific radius, and understanding this radius is the key to calculating your fabric needs. For a full circle skirt, the radius is your waist measurement divided by 2π (about 6.28). A 28-inch waist gives a radius of about 4.5 inches. Then add your skirt length plus seam allowance to get the total radius from center to hem.
Half circle skirts have a larger waist radius (waist divided by π) but require less overall fabric since they are only half a circle. Quarter circle skirts have the largest waist radius (waist times 2 divided by π) but use the least fabric. The trade-off is fullness — full circle skirts have the most dramatic twirl factor.
Fabric Layout for Circle Skirts
Circle skirt layout depends on your fabric width. For a full circle skirt with a short to knee length, you can often fit the entire circle on 54-60" fabric by folding the fabric in half and cutting a semi-circle. For longer lengths or wider waists, you may need to seam two half-circles together. Half and quarter circle skirts are more forgiving — they fit easily across standard fabric widths for most sizes.
