How much fabric for a blouse? Complete yardage guide for button-down, peasant, and wrap blouse styles.
Blouse Styles and Their Fabric Requirements
Blouses are one of my favorite sewing projects — they are versatile, customizable, and use a manageable amount of fabric. A standard button-down blouse in size M with short sleeves needs about 1.75 yards on 54" fabric. Peasant blouses use more fabric (about 2 yards) because of the gathered sleeves and bodice. Wrap blouses are similar to button-downs at 1.75 yards.
Sleeve length is the biggest variable. Going from sleeveless to long sleeves adds about 0.75 yards to your total. Bust measurement also matters — each 2 inches above the standard 36" adds about 0.02 yards. The calculator adjusts for all of these factors automatically.
Fabric Selection Tips for Blouses
Blouses look best in lightweight to medium-weight fabrics that drape well. My favorites include cotton poplin for crisp button-downs, rayon challis for flowy peasant blouses, and silk charmeuse for elegant wrap blouses. Avoid stiff fabrics like denim or heavy linen unless you are going for a specific structural look. Also consider fabric opacity — lighter colors may need lining or a double layer.
