How to Calculate Fabric for Bias Binding

Calculating fabric yardage for bias binding involves finding the total area of fabric needed, then working backward to determine the smallest square of fabric that can produce that binding. Here is the formula:

Step 1 — Required Binding Area:
Total binding area = Binding length × Strip width

Step 2 — Fabric Square Size:
Square side = √(Total binding area × (1 + Waste%))

Since a square yard = 36" × 36", divide the square side by 36
