Apron Fabric Calculator
Calculate fabric for aprons. Half, full, bib, and chef apron styles with size options.
Apron Styles and Yardage Requirements
When I first started making aprons, I underestimated how much fabric a full chef apron needs — the bib, the skirt, the waist ties, and the neck strap all add up. A half apron (waist-down only) is the most economical, needing just 0.5 to 0.75 yards. A bib apron adds a front chest panel. A full chef apron with a wide bib and long skirt needs 1.5 to 2 yards.
The calculator gives you base yardage for each style and size combination. Half aprons are great for quick projects and gifts. Bib aprons are the most popular for home bakers and crafters. Chef aprons are heavier and need medium-weight canvas or twill for durability.
Fabric Choices for Aprons
Cotton twill is my go-to apron fabric. It is sturdy, washes well, and comes in great colors and prints. For lighter aprons, linen or linen-cotton blends are beautiful — they soften with use and have a relaxed look. Canvas (10-12 oz) is best for heavy-duty chef aprons that need to resist stains and spills. Avoid quilting cotton for chef aprons; it is too lightweight and will not hold up to frequent washing.
