A-Line Skirt Yardage by Size and Length
I have sewn dozens of A-line skirts over the years, and one thing I can tell you is that fabric width matters more than you might think. A-line skirts are among the most efficient garments to cut — the front and back pieces are simple shapes that fit neatly across most fabric widths. But if you switch from 54" to 45" fabric, you jump from 1 yard to 1.25 yards for a knee-length skirt.
This A-line skirt yardage calculator covers four common lengths: mini (18"), knee (24"), midi (30"), and maxi (38"). The base yardage assumes a moderate A-line flare. If you prefer a very full A-line silhouette, expect to add 10-15% to the yardage shown.
Cutting Layout Tips for A-Line Skirts
For sizes XS through M on 54" fabric, the front and back pieces will fit side by side — place them with the center front and center back on the fold. For larger sizes, the front and back might need to be cut separately. I often cut the front on the fold and the back as two separate pieces with a center back seam for sizes L and above.
